This is a journey into sound...

So, apparently the CD is almost dead.

Not on my watch squire. While I love vinyl for its warmth, listen to cassettes in my car and use Mp3's for their portability, I was born in the early 80's and started buying music in the 90's so the humble compact disc is the format  that introduced me to so many of my favourite bands. I was a bit of a late starter with CD's though. I didn't have a CD player at first so my first few years of music collecting was all cassettes until on a school trip to Germany in 1995 i bought the "Woodstock 94" double cd compilation (it was a choice between that, Nirvana's "Bleach" or Silverchair's "Frogstomp" - i was a teenage grunge kid) from a small record shop in Cologne for about 15 Deutschmarks. In the following 17 years i've made up for lost time and carried on collecting CD's. a few weeks ago I decided to start listening to them in alphabetical order. Now this will take a while (my current estimate is just over a year) because i've got quite a few CD's. there's going to be highs and lows (at some point soon i will have to listen to Metal Machine Music in it's entirety...) and hopefully some forgotten gems along the way. I've decided to document it all, with just a few words about each CD as i listen to them along the way. I've decided I'm going to start by listening to one CD from each artist on the first alphabetical run through and then go back to A immediately after that ZZ Top best of, and so on until it's all done. that way i won't have a constant 2 weeks of only being able to listen to Mogwai which i'd quite enjoy, but it might get a bit monotonous for the non mogwai fans (heathens) among you. I'm going to try and post youtube videos for key tracks from each album so hopefully i can introduce some of y'all to some new music you may not have heard along the way...

  1. I am so looking forward to joining you on this journey. Hopefully will be lots of stuff I already know and love and some stuff I didn't already know. I may well interject with something from my own collection when I spot a gap in yours as we go. Oh and well done on the "one CD from each artist" approach - I wasn't looking forward to a month of Mogwai (yes, I know I am one of the heathens to whom you refer!)
