The Afghan Whigs - Uptown Avondale EP

The Afghan Whigs were a bit of an anomoly in the grunge era. They were lumped in with your Pearl Jam's and your Stone Temple Pilot's but they were a different beast all together. frontman Greg Dulli didn't want to be Neil Young or Roger Daltrey. He wanted to be Reverend Al Green or Isaac Hayes.

Uptown Avondale was a 5 track EP consisting of 4 covers of Stax/Motown era classics and a remix of one of their earlier tracks (Milez is dead, retitled on this EP as Rebirth Of The Cool). The remix is kinda dated now as it came out 20 years ago so sounds a bit "Fools Gold" as was the fashion in 1992 but the other four tracks are still well worth tracking down.

The EP opens with a cover of Freda Payne's classic "Band Of Gold", then theres a version of "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road", an excellent take on The Supreme's "Come See About Me" before my favourite track, a sinister and brooding cover of Rev. Al Green's "Beware"...
